Pinot Noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler regions. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

The tremendously broad range of bouquets, flavors, textures and impressions that Pinot noir can produce sometimes confuses tasters. In the broadest terms, the wine tends to be of light to medium body with an aroma reminiscent of black cherry, raspberry or currant.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is grown in nearly every major wine producing country among a diverse spectrum of climates.

One of the most noted traits of Cabernet Sauvignon is its affinity for oak, either during fermentation or in barrel aging. In addition to having a softening effect on the grape’s naturally high tannins, the unique wood flavors of vanilla and spice complement the natural grape flavors of black currant and tobacco.

Alexander Valley 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
Red Wine by Alexander Valley from Sonoma County, California. A late ripening concentrated the flavors while also assuring that the ying and yang of the fruit-the acid and sugar levels-were in perfect balance. The result is a rich, juicy Cab with an expressive nose of cassis and spice. Flavors of black cherry and cocoa dominate this silky wine, but there are also hints of eucalyptus and mint. The 2005 is 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot filling out the remainder of the blend. Zinfandel

Zinfandel grapes typically produce a robust red wine. It’s high sugar content can be fermented into levels of alcohol exceeding 15 percent.

The taste of zinfandel wine greatly depends on the ripeness of the grapes from which it is made as ell as the temperatures in which it is grown. Red berry fruits like raspberry predominate in wines grown in cooler areas. Blackberry, anise and pepper notes are more common in wines made from grapes grown in warmer areas or made from the earlier-ripening Primitivo clone.

Our 2005 Snake Eyes Zinfandel spent 20 months in French (68%) and American (32%) oak barrels and has flavors of black raspberry and blackberry jam. While the wine drinks great now, it also has strong tannins that make it suitable for aging. This is a big wine that doesn’t back down to big flavors. Serve with slow-roasted baby back ribs or blackened fish. $37.99
